Cast a Liu Yao chart: write the question, then read the result

Six coin tosses fill Najia, the six relatives, Shi, Ying and the focus line. The day turns at 23:00. You can read the chart, or keep asking about this one cast.

The coins fall, and the hexagram keeps its own measure

A Liu Yao chart takes three steps

First, write the one matter clearly. One matter that is already underway, or a decision you have to make soon. The more specific it is, the less the focus line slides onto something else.

Second, after you submit, the program tosses six times and records a value from the bottom line to the top. How the faces become a line, and which lines move, is in the calculation below.

Third, read the finished chart. The original hexagram, the changed hexagram, moving lines, Najia, the six relatives, Shi, Ying, and the focus line are filled in together. The same values always produce the same hexagram. The reading does not change the lines.

What to have ready

Write the question before the toss. If the question is still vague, the chart will not be about the matter you actually meant. One sentence is enough: who, which matter, and what you want to judge. Keep two unrelated matters out of the same hexagram.

You do not need a birth time, and you do not need to bring coins. The day boundary uses the timezone frozen when you ask. The day turns at 23:00.

If you are not sure the matter fits, read what Liu Yao is first.

Ways to word the question

You can adapt these to your own matter. Questions about how you are holding up describe a feeling. They are not a diagnosis.

  • Relationships: Will they reply this week? After we meet, will this continue?
  • Work: Should I keep waiting on this job? After the interview, will they offer a next step?
  • Money: Is the money I already paid still recoverable? Should I pause this expense?
  • A choice: Of the two things in front of me, which comes first? Should I settle this now?
  • How you are holding up: Sleep has been light. Might this ease? Energy is lagging. Is it wise to keep pushing? This is not a medical opinion.
  • Lost things and paperwork: Which step is that document stuck on? Is the object still in the area I already searched?

How a Liu Yao chart is calculated

A Liu Yao chart turns this question into a chart you can check. The inputs are the matter you wrote, the kind of question, the six values from the program, and the time frozen when you asked. The output is the original hexagram, the changed hexagram, moving lines, the six relatives, Shi, Ying, the focus line, the month, the day, and void. Check those fields before you read the wording that follows.

fatequery lays the chart out with a fixed set of rules, then lets the AI explain only the fields already on it. Different coin values, or a different time of asking, produce a different chart. The same values and the same time produce the same chart.

What the chart needs

It does not need a birth date, a birth time, or a gender. It needs this question.

  • The matter: one thing already underway, or a decision you have to make soon. Keep two unrelated matters out of the same hexagram.
  • The kind of question: this chooses the focus line. Your own side looks at Shi, the other person looks at Ying, money looks at Wealth, work looks at Officer, how you are holding up looks at Descendants, and documents or outcomes look at Parents.
  • The six values: on submit, the program tosses the three-coin method six times. You do not type the lines in, and there is no separate cast from the clock or from a number you call out.
  • The time of the question: frozen in the device timezone at submit, and used for the month, the day, and void.

How the coins become lines

A coin has a character side and a plain side. All character sides are old yang, and that line moves. Mostly character sides are young yin, and the line stays. Mostly plain sides are young yang, and the line stays. All plain sides are old yin, and that line moves. Lines stack from the bottom: the first toss is the bottom line, and the last toss is the top line.

Young yin and young yang stay in the original hexagram. Old yin becomes young yang, and old yang becomes young yin. The lines that moved make the changed hexagram. If no line moves, there is no changed hexagram.

Which rules fill the chart

The chart is filled with Jingfang Najia. Each line receives a stem and branch, an element, a relative, and a spirit, and is marked Shi or Ying when it is one of those two. A line clashed by the month is month-broken. A line clashed by the day is day-clashed. A line inside void is marked void. If the relative you need is missing from the original hexagram, the hidden spirit is marked.

This is the method this page declares, so the same inputs can be cast again. It does not claim that every Liu Yao book places lines or chooses the focus line this way. Another book can produce another chart. That difference does not, by itself, mean either chart was miscalculated.

Which fields you can check

Before any AI reading, the chart already shows the original hexagram and its palace; the changed hexagram when a line moves; the month, the day, and void; and, on each line, its place, spirit, relative, Najia stem and branch, element, and the marks for moving, Shi, Ying, month-break, day clash, and void. A missing relative is marked as a hidden spirit. The focus line is marked on the line it sits on. Later wording can only cite these fields.

How the clock changes the day

The month, the day, and void use the time of the question, not a birth time, and the chart does not shift that clock to true solar time. The timezone is frozen when you submit. The day turns at 23:00. A question close to that hour can land on a different day than one asked earlier, so check the recorded time before you compare two charts.

Where to look when two charts disagree

A different result does not mean one chart was miscalculated. The six coin values, the order of the lines, the Najia rules, how the focus line is chosen, the time of the question, and the day boundary can all change the chart.

Hold the question still and check one thing at a time: the six values, then the time, then the line where the focus line, Shi, Ying, or a moving line first disagrees. Compare the written readings only after those fields match.

The chart and the AI reading are two steps

The rules calculate the palace, the lines, the relatives, Shi and Ying, the focus line, and the time fields. The AI only arranges the chart already cast. It does not change lines, fill in a birth time, or start a second hexagram.

Liu Yao is a traditional way of reading. The same inputs can be cast again into the same chart. That does not mean its judgment of the matter has been verified. For reference only — not a substitute for medical, legal, or financial advice.

What the chart shows, and how to read it

After the cast, these items are calculated, not added afterward: the original hexagram and its palace; the changed hexagram when a line moves; the month, the day, and void; on each line, its place, spirit, relative, Najia stem and branch, element, and the marks for moving, Shi, Ying, month-break, day clash, and void; a missing relative marked as a hidden spirit; and the line the focus line sits on.

Read in this order. Find the focus line, and see which line it sits on, whether it moves, and whether it is void. Then look at Shi and Ying: Shi is your side, and Ying is the other person or the setting. Then see whether any line moves. Only a moving line opens the changed hexagram, which is the new condition that comes out of the movement. Last, check void, month-break, and day clash. A line that is void or broken is not yet a result in hand. If no line moves, the hexagram is quiet, and you read where the focus line sits now.

The Liu Yao chart on fatequery

The Liu Yao chart on fatequery is an online cast for people who study the Yijing. Write the question and the hexagram is cast. You can keep the chart, read an AI interpretation, or fill in the method from the knowledge base.

The reading is done by an AI reader built for Liu Yao. It draws on advice from more than twenty working diviners, and it reads in the line of Zengshan Buyi, Bushi Zhengzong, the Complete Book of Divination, Golden Strategy, the Yizhuan, and Yiyin, checking the wording against old and recent cases. It starts from the focus line, then brings in the month and the day, the five phases, the six relatives, Shi and Ying, movement and strength, combination and clash, void, and month-break. The conclusion comes first, then the evidence.

Casting, study, and questions about work, relationships, money, or study can all be used as a reference. If you are not sure what you can ask, read what Liu Yao is first.

Common questions

What is Liu Yao good for?
One specific matter that is already underway, or a decision you have to make soon: how a job is moving, whether someone will reply, or where a document is stuck. Ask one thing at a time.
How reliable is a Liu Yao reading?
The hexagram is the image from this coin cast, set beside the matter. Whether it fits still comes back to the matter itself.
Do I need real coins?
You do not need to bring coins. After you submit the question, the program tosses the three-coin method six times and fills the chart.
How soon is the chart ready?
Once the question is written and submitted, the six tosses are fixed at once. The original hexagram, the changed hexagram, and the focus line are ready then.
What if I cannot read the result?
Start with the line the focus line sits on, then Shi, Ying, and any moving line. Each name has a short definition on this page and in the knowledge base. After the cast you can also read the chart line by line.
Can I ask about someone else?
You can ask about one matter that involves you and is already underway, such as whether the other person will reply. Keep two unrelated people out of the same hexagram.
Should this be Liu Yao or BaZi?
For one specific matter already underway, use Liu Yao. For the pattern of a birth time, use BaZi. Each one reads a different stretch of time.
How do I read a quiet hexagram?
When no line moves, there is no changed hexagram. Read where the focus line sits now, and whether it is void, month-broken, or clashed by the day.
Can I make decisions from this hexagram?
For reference only — not a substitute for medical, legal, or financial advice. The hexagram shows an image. The decision still depends on the matter itself.
